Are MRSA and VRE More Serious Threats Than Swine Flu

Michael Bennett, a frequent contributor to my blogs submitted written testimony to the Maryland State Legislature Senate Finance Committee in 2008 supporting Senate Bill 102. In his testimony, Mr. Bennett cited a 2007 study published by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) that found over a million patients are infected with MRSA every year. A shocking 86% of these infections occurred in healthcare facilities. The mortality rate connected with these infections neared 10%. Simple math tells us that is 100,000 deaths a year from MRSA vs. 140 deaths from Swine Flu.

Another study in 2007 by theResources for the Future, cited by Mr. Bennett showed a two fold increase in MRSA infections of the 5-year period 1999-204.

Also in 2007 the CDC published a study in JAMA which showed that deaths from invasive MRSA sterile site infections alone now surpass deaths from AIDS.

According to Mr. Bennett, “Healthcare leadership has known for decades that isolating the entire reservoir of spread of these pathogens (MRSA and VRE) is an essential component of infection control, yet many healthcare leaders have chosen not to recommend such an approach.” I can't help but wonder why. Aren't we supposed to get better in hospitals...

Here in Arkansas we have a watered down bill (Acts 2007, No.845 codified as 20-9-1203) for reporting infections that is supposed to come into effect this year. Will it help stop the death and suffering…probably not. What we need is public outcry to implement the SHEA 2003 Guidelines in all our health care facilities. Ask your hospital if it follows the SHEA 2003 Guidelines.

MRSA and VRE and other similar infections are very serious - and seriously under-reported, even when mandatory.

They represent a semi-permanent problem that has to be addressed in many ways.

Swine Flu might yet fade away - and however serious it gets, it will eventually finish probably quite quickly - to be remembered as one of a series of human health disasters, possibly to join MRSA etc as the ones that should and could have been prevented.

The WHO vets are now on their way to investigate Mexico's pig farms and the allegations that pigs are the immediate source.

The jury is still out on that.

If it was pigs in Mexico, the British Government are in a spot. They will have to announce the results of testing the pigs for MRSA and the implications, if they know them.

So, the various zoonotic diseases will impact on one another, not least in the hospitals. How, we yet have difficulty in seeing.

The internet comes into its own for forcing governments to do their job properly and to quickly disseminate information.

MRSA was found in raw chicken meat as far back as the mid 1980's and a University of Microbiology in Japan published the results. Raw meat with MRSA includes pork, most likely also in turkey meats. Antibiotics are routinely fed to farm factory animals as a growth stimulant and to keep them alive in pure filth (they are forced to live in their own excrement-feces and urine; in fact the ammonia fumes are so horrendous, it burns their lungs) in confined areas in most cases they are unable to move. Most chickens, for instance-a single chicken lives its entire life in a space no larger than a piece of typing paper. HORRENDOUS STRESS itself lowers immune systems. (ALL bird and swine flus are traced in farm factories but that's another discussion.) Multiple open wounds from man handling become portals of infection; these farm animals become septic thus MRSA becomes incorporated into the muscle tissue (i.e., meat). MRSA is highly contagious so just picking up RAW MEAT infected with MRSA, to prepare it can lead to infection-MRSA inhabiting micro cracks of the skin, and touching one's nose, even without thinking about it. There you go!
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that ALL animals have staph on their skin. Do the math
Staph + antibiotic abuse = MRSA

The USDA is fully aware of it but chooses to do nothing about it, in fact has hired people to testify that antibiotics used as a daily part of the feed is safe and effective. Okay. whatever. Yeah right..I guess they think I have stupid written across my forehead.

Sorry I forgot to include some links since people are too lazy to do a google search

Keep in mind farm factory workers are heavily gowned and even wear gas masks because the pure slush of urine and feces they wade through, and the ammonia fumes burn the lungs of these workers as well. It is highly unlikely these animals get the disease from humans due to heavy gowning and masks used. Keep in mind ANTIBIOTIC ABUSE and that little easy math formula is the cause:

STAPH (present in all animals) + ANTIBIOTIC ABUSE = MRSA

I can go on and on and on and on and on and cite article after article. And of course the meat industry is denying it all, and the USDA ignores all of the research-but hires people to say how safe it is to use antibiotics routinely in farm factory animals in the feed and water. People believe it: I guess the public does have stupid written on their foreheads to believe that.
